White on Juniperus communis
Marja Pennanen, 07-10-2017 13:11
Hello again,

Seppo told, that they were interested in a Hyalopeziza on Juniperus. So, I checked some branches yesterday and was happy to find something. But what I look for and what I find are often a different thing. This time I found only troubles.

These white stipate, hairy ones are about 0,2 mm wide and maybe a bit taller.
The spores are about 3-5x1,5 and asci 19-24x4-5.
The troubles were caused by the hairs. At first I thought, that this is a strange stipate Cistellalike thing, but closer look revealed, that the hairs were warted or granulose. The size of them is about 10-20x3-5.

Evenif white, can this be a Hyphodiscus species?

The hais are to small to be figured? They are not curved as in Hamatocanthoscypha laricionis?

Hi Zotto,

the hairs are clavate, sometimes even very swollen as in the photos. In the one, where I had allready IKi added, you may see some warts near the top of the hair in the middle.. I saw no curved hairs. The asci seems IKI-.

By the way I suppose, that I saw no paraphyses, but I have had difficulties to find them now in many specimen. The paraphyses shield the asci from drying and now it is so wet here, that there is no need for extra protection.

Greetings from a field trip with Seppo and Karen. It's nice and wet here in Sweden. ....Seppo asking Zotto: Do you know anything about Cystopezizella venceslai Velen.? It is supposed to have bladder-like marginal cells...

btw. We checked some Juniperus communis here and found Hamatocanthoscypha "conincola" with wider hairs than laricionis var laricionis, no sight of Hyalopezizas or anything like this on Juniperus.

Re : White on Juniperus communis
Hi Marja & Timo
sorry for my ignorance, now I see the hairs :-)  In what I identified as Cistella improvisa I saw such conical hairs but longer. And the apos were light yellow.

Cystopezizela venceslai is a synonym of Cystop. sanguinea in my database. Two samples as aff. sanguinea are in my "Calycina white aseptate" folder. Yes, bladder-like and with a big VB inside.

Greetings also to Seppo.

Zotto
