Margot en Geert VullingsOn a barkless poplar branch, we found hairy discs
On decorticated hardwood from a New York City Park just last weekend. I think that these might be Hyphodiscus. The apothecia are waxy and tend to crumble when sectioned. The color is white, but they discolor a orange-reddish color. They are short stipitate.
Asci are hemiamyloid, red in IKI and blue in IKI after pretreatment with KOH. With croziers. Measuring:
28.8-35.9 x 4.4-5.3µm
Paraphyses are more or less cylindrical. Paraphyses width: 1.6-2.0µm
Hairs with rounded ends, with punctate ornamentation. Hairs width: 2.5-3.2µm
Spores are small fusiform and quite small usually with one or two oil drops at each end, measuring:
4.3-5.8 x 2.1-2.7µm
Me: 5.0 x 2.3µm
Q: 1.8-2.8
Qe: 2.2
N=15
I see some similarity to photos in Zottos Hyphodiscus chrysoexcipulatus folder labelled Hyphodiscus 'Cistella'.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks!
