Fuscolachnum on Sphagnum?
Edvin Johannesen, 12-02-2024 23:41
Edvin JohannesenThese very tiny apothecia were growing on capsules and capsule stalks of Sphagnum sp. Western Norway. Spores cylindrical-ellipsoid, ca. 5-6 x 1.5 micr., asci ca. 30 x 5 micr. (IKI+ blue pore in Lugol), paraphysaes broadly lanceolate, ca. 45 x 5 micr., Apothecium rim densely covered by septate, warted, slightly swollen, very short hairs, brownish at the base, becoming hyaline at the tip. Agree with Fuscolachnum? Any suggestion for species, given the substrate/host?

Fuscolachnum is a goos idea, but you have no photo of the hairs?

Actually, I didn't know this was published, because I got an error message. I guess I was trying to upload too many photos. Here are some more.

Not sure if your previous posting disappeared. Now I see clearly. Since I have nothing in my database and mind, I suggest to ask someone like Timo or Seppo who were dealing with moss-inhabiting species. Or George Greiff.

Re : Fuscolachnum on Sphagnum?
I did not remember a post by Nina which appears to be the same. Spores measured *4,6 (4,1-5,4) x 1,3 (1,2-1,6). It was Febr. 2013:

Thanks again - it is definitely the same species!

Re : Fuscolachnum on Sphagnum?
Hi Edvin,

This is a nice species, and good to see it being found a second time – I remember being intrigued by Nina's observation. I agree that Fuscolachnum is a good bet for the genus. The only species described from bryophytes is F. necator on Polytrichum, but that species has significantly longer spores. It may be worth comparing critically to the species known from vascular plants since bryophyte capsules are often, but not always, domains of more generalist fungi. If it does not match, then it is likely something new, as is often the case with smaller and more obscure bryophilous ascos.

All the best,
George

Thanks for your comments, Georges. I am awaiting comments from Seppo Huhtinen. Let's see what/if he has an opinion.
