long-necked pyrenomycete with very long fine hairs
Ethan Crenson, 28-08-2020 07:19
In the northeastern US, on decorticated wood I found these unusual (to me) pyrenomycetes with long necks and long, very fine black hairs.  The fruiting bodies appear both immersed in the wood and on the surface, probably by erosion of the surrounding wood.  They measure about 1.2mm  long total and the neck is about 0.7mm long.  Hairs thick walled, septate about 3µm wide. Asci with a prominent IKI- apical ring. Spores hyaline, septate, with 2 oil drops, faintly striate (I think) 7-8.5 x 3.5-4µm. It looks like something in the neighborhood of Barbatosphaeria to my untrained eye.  Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Re : long-necked pyrenomycete with very long fine hairs
Hi Ethan,

I think your collection should be compared with Lentomitella cirrhosa as described by Réblova (2006) in Mycologia 98: 68-93. Try to observe the short stipes of asci. The hairs on wood surface are not typical and may be fortuitous.

There is also an excellent key to the beaked genera in Réblova (2013) in Mycologia 105: 462-475. I guess you have access to Mycologia, otherwise I will send you the pdfs.

Cheers,

Jacques

Re : long-necked pyrenomycete with very long fine hairs
Hello Jacques!

Thank you for the help.  The asci have very short stipes and measure 55-67 x 6-7µm.  I have the paper from 2006.  My collection is very similar to the description of Lentomitella cirrhosa.  I do not have access to mycologia, so if you can send me Réblova (2013) in Mycologia 105, I would be very grateful.

Regards,

Ethan
