Nemania illita ?
Ethan Crenson, 01-02-2020 23:34
Hello all,

This was found earlier this week in New York City. I think it is likely to be Nemania illita. Effuse black carbonaceous pyreno on well rotted hardwood.  The ostioles are papillate, perthecial mounds indistinct.  There is white material between the perithecia.  Ascopores are light brown, inequalateral-ellipsoid, but usually not completely flat on one side, rather with a slight bulge.  Many ascospores are somewhat acute at one end.  Guttulate.  I did not detect a germ slit. They measure 11-14 x 3.5-3.75µm.  Asci long stipitate, IKI+, with apical plug taller than it is wide, about 2-2.5µm tall x 1.5µm wide. Two different Nemania keys resulted in Nemania illita.  Is there anything else it could be?

Many thanks in advance,

Ethan

Re : Nemania illita ?
Hi Ethan

this must be N. illita, the greyish spores are diagnostic and other features match well.

Great find!

Best,

Jacques
