Globose-spored Scutellinia
Gernot Friebes, 24-01-2020 18:05
Hi,

I'm looking for help with this unkown Scutellinia. I collected it on soil about 1800–1900 m a.s.l. The ascospores are globose, the warts are mostly isolated but sometimes connected, up to 4 µm broad, the ascospores are about 20 µm in diam. (without warts). The hairs are very short (< 200 µm long) and pale, somewhat obtuse, the base is simple.

Best wishes,
Gernot

Re : Globose-spored Scutellinia
Hi, Gernot -

did you compare S. sinensis? (see Gjedura in Mycotaxon LXXIX, 2001). The spores are a bit smaller and the hairs darker, but spore shape and spore ornamentation seem to fit.

Schöne Grüße, Till

This looks very much like S barlae to me. Spherical spores 16-24 low rounded warts, hairs under 300 long with simple or very occasional bi-furcate base.

Re : Globose-spored Scutellinia
Hi, Till & Mal,

sorry for my belated response. Scutellinia barlae should have smaller warts as far as I know, which is why I would exclude it here. Scutellinia sinensis/tuberculata does have similar spore ornamentation but there are indeed some differences in spore size and hair morphology. Scutellinia citrina is another species I considered but obviously the spores are much too small. A difficult one...

Thank you and best wishes,
Gernot
