Question about nomenclature

Peter Welt
A question about nomenclature. Is it permissible for a genus of fungi and a genus of beetles to have the same name?

Re : Question about nomenclature
there is no unicode, so yes. But if it is a yet uncoined name it would be advisble to avoid it :-)

Re : Question about nomenclature
Thanks, the name has been around since 1967. Caccobius of Kimbrough in Kimbrough & Korf, Am. J. Bot. 54 (1): 22. Is probably a mushroom as well as a beetle genus (dung beetle).

Best regard Peter

Lieber Peter,

meines Wissens ist das kein Problem.

Re : Question about nomenclature

This case is not too rare.

For instance Trichia is a myxomycete (so a plant ....) and a snail, too.

Best, Lothar

Re : Question about nomenclature
Danke Lothar. Myxomyceten sind wohl jetzt Pflanzen?

Re : Question about nomenclature
Hello Peter,

the relevant part of the Code is Art. 54 (incl. Rec. 54A): https://www.iapt-taxon.org/nomen/pages/main/art_54.html

Cheers
Viktorie

Re : Question about nomenclature

Hallo Peter,

Alles klar Danke. Gruß Peter

Re : Question about nomenclature
but note that no longer is a botanical code but a code that also in name includes the fungi: International Code of Nomenclature for algae, fungi, and plants. In my opinon an imporant step forward. Myxomycota/Mycetozoa has an interesting nomenclatural situation..... (can be seen as included in the named code if fungi is not viewed as Fungi)

Re : Question about nomenclature

Hello Thomas,

I did not know that. This is a step forward, also in my eyes.
