I have found this orbilia on a dead tree Beach. I do not have any key to determinate this kind.


the spores 7,5-12 x 2,5-4,5 um


Can anybody help me with this one?

Did you measure the width of the asci? The true spores are perhaps 3 x 1 µm large I guess.
Free spores are often sparse in Orbilia. Perhaps you will find a few or you see their shape inside the asci.

Thanks,I throught you should never maesure the sporee in th ascus... I Will make a new sample and try to measure them. I did not find a lot of spores, but at least 12 I have measured..

These spores do not belong to the Orbilia. Do they have some colour?
In Orbilia you may measure spores inside the asci, their size will be quite the same as outside. It is a fairy tale that free spores are more mature than those inside asci. The reverse may be true because you can frequently find overmature and germinating spores inside dead asci.

I have found the smal ones. Not in the asci, i could not see the shape of them.


Could it be Orbilia delicatula?


There are two drops in the end and they are a bite moonlike shaped.


There were slimemolds in between them. maybe that explains the other spores.

Yes, great! And also the small warts on the spores are visible. There is actually a drop only at one end, except for minute ones.

Yes, O. delicatula, but we returned now  to the older name O. xanthostigma.

Is this collection from Netherlands, and from which region?

I have found them in De Brand Udenhout The south of the Netherlands.
I would love to learn more About Orbilia's . Is there a book where I can learn more about this species.
I also read you mentioned there is a dvd? Do you know about is and where I could buy this?

Beware of this genus! It is a big mess, and when our publication will come out you  will get struck of it.

Thank you for sharing your folders with me. I did not know there were so many orbilia's.  Ik think there are about 23 found in The Netherlands.  This was my second species. So a lot more to go.

Yes, this is the most often collected species of Orbilia, at least in the herbaria it appears frequently. The problem with this species is that white and yellow collections belong to different species, with a very different rDNA (over 15% distance), although the microscopy is the very same. So we use leucostigma and xanthostigma for them. This is only valid within Europe. Pale yellow collections belong also to xanthostigma, but data on apothecial colour were often not mentioned and in the herbarium the difference gets finally lost.
