Sarcoscypha macaronesica not Macaronesian?
Miguel Ángel Ribes, 03-07-2016 20:56
Miguel Ãngel RibesGood night

This Sarcoscypha, 1-1,5 cm diam., was found in Spain, Andalucía, Córdoba, 421 m, 24-I-2016, in small twigs, probably Viburnun tinus, in a forest with Pinus pinea, Quercus suber, Corylus avellana and Castanea sativa.

Spore size and shape fits me more with S. macaronesica than S. coccinea. Is it possible?

Spore measurement in water, 1000x and live:

(21,4) 24 - 30,8 (33) x (9,4) 10 - 12 (13,6) µm
Q = (2) 2,2 - 2,9 (3,3) ; N = 102
Me = 27 x 10,9 µm ; Qe = 2,5

Thanks a lot.

Re : Sarcoscypha macaronesica not Macaronesian?
Ah, this is very good! Your question was repeatedly raised, and I cannot answer it. S. macaronesica was now and then believed to occur around the mediterranean see, but evidence was never brought by molecular data. I fear the morphological differences to S. coccinea are too unsharp to clarify this question with the LM.

Your spores are a bit too wide for S. macaronesica according to my key. Apo size would be good indeed. Sequences exist for all these species, so it should work with the molecular method (ITS would be fully sufficient).

Thanks a lot Zotto

I will ask the collector to make molecular analysis.

The best.
