Helotiales with spores 55 x 2 µm
Andreas Gminder, 07-08-2014 13:51
Andreas Gminder

Dear friends,

yesterday we found a small inoperculate discomycete on the inner side of bark of Fagus.

Macroscopically it looked like a small Pezizella or similar things. No visible hairs, no visible stipe. The colour is whitish to light creamish.

Microscopically it was surprising because of the verys thin and long spores, measuring approx. 50-55 x 2 µm, containing a few droplets. No septae are obvious, but most likely the spores have septae. The asci are not much longer, approx. 70 µm and the porus is strongly IKI blue

I have no opportunity at the moment to scan my scetches, as I'm on a field trip. But may be someone has an idea in which direction I can search. The very distinctive spores may be the clue to the species.

thank you and best regards,

Andreas

Hi Andreas,

Gorgoniceps maybe? What does the excipulum look like?

Best wishes,
Gernot

Hello Gernot,

the excipulum was definitely a hyaline textura oblita, with no remarkable hair-like structures.

best regards,

Andreas

Re : Helotiales with spores 55 x 2 µm

Hello Gernot,

yes, Gorgoniceps is surely the right genus.

I will have a look at the excipulum once more (when I have time), because as far as I remember it was hyaline or nearly so., and not brownish.

best regards and many thanks,

Andreas
