Another Scutellinia
Malcolm Greaves, 05-06-2014 00:21
Malcolm GreavesSomeone asked me to look at this Scutellinia found on soil amongst moss in a bog nature reserve.
The largest apothecia was 8.5 mm.
The spores were fusiform and some had large tubercules others with lower more uniform warts. They were c23 x 11. No sign of the outer surface detaching when heated in LCB.
The hairs were up to 450 but mostly under 300 x 40 with walls 5 um. All were simple rooted none with multi-furcate roots.

The spores are too small for S macrospora the rooting seems to rule out S cejpii. The hairs are too thick for S heterosculpturata.

Can anyone suggest what it might be?
Thanks
Mal

Re : Another Scutellinia
Well, generally looking the spores indeed deviate from S. heteroscultpturata... My collections have marginal hairs up to 30 micr. diam and up to 4,5(5,0) micr. thick walls. Anyway, I cannot fully reject S. heterosculpturata (have seen only few collections) but on the other hand can not identify your specimen as such! More details would be necessary (e.g. ornamental unit dimmensions; statistically sufficient measurements of fully valid spores, etc.) but you can also send me your dried material if you like!

There are few specimens in our fungarium (CNF) from bogs that could maybe match your collection, but it would require thorough analysis. It may take some time...

Cheers,
N.
