Fungus on ginger rhizome (anamorph)
Martin Bemmann, 09-02-2014 12:28
Martin Bemmann

Hi,

Yesterday I bought some rhizomes of Zingiber officinale for kitchen use in a supermarket. It was declared as "organic" and imported from China. With the naked eye I noticed some black spots that turned out to be heaps of conidia under the dissecting microscope, ejected from long beaked obpyriform pycnidia (0.24 x 0.6 mm) of waxy colour, the "beak" turned out to be fasciculate, consisting of a bundle of hyphae.

Conidia: lemon-shaped, dark brown sometimes with lipid bodies, 19.5 - 23 x 12-15µm

Someone wih an idea?

best regards
Martin

Perfect, Zotto! I was misleaded by finding not a single ascus. Melanospora zamiae is reported to be common on imported material from the tropics (Cannon&Hawksworth 1982). I found a list of pests imported to the US of 1958 where it is listed on Ginger originating from China and Japan (Hunt 1958: 51).

Best regards
