Apothecia with hyphomycetes on Helianthus - Denmark
Karen Poulsen, 13-04-2024 12:49
On standing stem from last year. Surrounded by hyphomycetes and seen elsewhere without.

Small, greyish apothecia, approx. 250 µm diam. Slightly tapered, but without an actual stalk. The outside consisting of round (at the bottom) to more elongated cells, ending at the top with long cells rounded at the tip. A few cells appear to end in a hair?. Paraphyses +/- curved at the top, where they are also slightly expanded to approx. 3 µm. Otherwise 2.2-2.4 µm. Asci 8-spored, somewhat thick-walled, club-shaped, J- in lugol, 44-54 x 11-15 µm. Spores 0-1(3) septate, with a sort of sheath around, from which the spores may be released. Some spores seem to be without. Is measured up to 6 µm in width. The spores measure 17.4-20.9 µm.

Best regards,

Karen P.

Hi Karen,

sounds and looks like Strossmayeria sp.

Compare with this collection:

Do you have pictures of the Conidia of the hyphomycete?

Regards

Martin

Hi Martin,

Thank you. I have uploadet photos of hyphomycetes with conidia. Does any Strossmayeria have that kind of conidia?

I don't think that these are mature conidia (too hyaline and small). Attached is a selection of different species from Iturriaga & Korf 1990.

Re : Apothecia with hyphomycetes on Helianthus - Denmark
The material is from February, so doesn't mature any more. I have looked at the bottom and find darker and larger conidia, 16-22 x 5-65 µm.

Hmm.. they do not fit to Pseudospiropes :-(

So maybe it is something else...

Sorry

The living ascus of the 2nd photo looks fully maturem and I conclude that the spores are non-septate when mature. This is no Strossmayeria but I have no idea what else.

In Strossmayeria the spores are multiseptate when ejected. Usually parts of the excipulum react amyloid (blue), which could be checked here.

Thank You,

There is no reaction at the excipulum in lugol - dried material.
