This the first year with a microscope to look at this white ascocarp that I see each year in one location. It starts as a cup and gets to 4-5cm and flattens out, it is always on small pieces of wood amongst litter in a wet, Cool Temperate Eucalyptus forest, solitary and bunching.
Asci: 310-360um, -ve MLZ, rounded base =-ve crozier, apical operculum
Spores: 24.3-29.5 x 10.0-11.4um, 2-3LB's 3.5-6.7um, most have blunted ends with indent, some with envelope.
Paraphyses: 1.5-3um, filiform, small droplets towards apex, septate and LBs
From the ID key it looks close to S.jurana to me but this seems unlikely with no history of it in this country.

Hi Peter
This looks indeed like a Sarcoscypha. The undulating ascus stalk seemingly without croziers and the thickened operculum are diagnostic, also the proismatic ectal excipulum. I remember a S. vassiljevae with white apothecia if I am not wrong.
I assume the country is Australia or New Zealand?

Many thanks Zotto and yes I am in Australia, more spefically Sth Gippsland, Victoria, which has a cool temperate climate.
I made a mistake with my first try which did have the location details but forgot the next time sorry.
There were not many images when I googled for white Sarcoscypha, I will try to look for info on S. vassiljevae; is it possible for it to live in a cool climate, albeit with some hot summer days of 40c+?

From GBIF: Sarcoscypha vassiljevae is indeed white and finds are in Russia and Japan, cool climate may not be an issue.

I have a survey on the species, with this note:
Sarcoscypha vassiljevae Raitv. 1964, Eesti NSV Tead. Akad. Toim. (Biol.) 13:29 - From Wladiwostok. Apothecia with constantly white hymenium, spores 21-29 x 10-13 µm.
What mounting medium did you use? It seems to me lethal to cells, or you took the dry sample in water.

Sampled over a few days and it did dry out, most mounts were in KOH but some in water.
I have looked at the link you provided and I am keen to get fresh material after reading the importance of it with this genus, it is not far away from home.

Yes, vital studies are essential in discomycetes. For S. vassiljevae there is no vital study known to me, regrettably, but two ITS sequences exist in GenBank.
