Puccinia on Euphorbia cf maculata in the wild

Hi. I found a patch of Euphorbia cf maculata infested with a phytopathogenic fungus, most probably a Puccinia, but which one is specific to the chamaesyce group (Euphorbia). I saw a similar pic og P. media on a Euphorbia sp. - is it the same? Also P. levata in hawaii (eupharbia too) is closehttp://www.hear.org/pph/images/16_097.htm
Thanks and best regards

Hi Stephen,
in (Central) Europe, there is just one rust on Euphorbias of Sect. Chamaesyce: Uromyces proëminens. That also fits the teliospores with one cell in your sample (Puccinia has two-celled teliospores, furthermore there are no Puccinia on Euphorbia in (central) Europe.).
Best,
Björn

Re : Puccinia on Euphorbia cf maculata in the wild
Many thanks Bjorne. Very interesting information and likely it is first record for Malta. I will mention you if something gets published of course. Strange that it was found in the wild (close to cultivated area). Mycobank suggests to use the taxon Uredo proëminens DC :

I dont know if you have a preference re taxonomy.
Attractive pathogen! I will later share few better photos from the card of the other camera in this post.
Thanks again
Stephen

Re : Puccinia on Euphorbia cf maculata in the wild
Hi Stephen,
Uredo is usually used as a form genus for rusts that are only known in the uredial stage and which cannot be assigned to any of the proper rust genera like Puccinia, Uromyces etc.
All current literature that I have available like Klenke & Scholler, Gäumann, Termorshuizen & Swertz use Uromyces as the proper genus for rusts on Euphorbia.
Best,
Björn
