Hello,

On 02-09-2020 I took home some cow dung (Black Angus cows)

Today the Pilobolus appeared :-)

Is this Pilobolus kleinii?

I used the key:

Sporangia not umbonate - Sporangiophore under 5 mm, trophocyst within the substratum - Spores ellipsoid - Spores 7.5-19.5 - Spores pale yellow = P. crystallinus - Spores deeper yellow/orange = P. kleinii

Are the spores yellow enough for P. kleinii?

Spore sizes: Me=10.2 x 6.4 µm,  N=10

Hallo Riet,Wat gaaf dat je opnieuw Pilobolus hebt gevonden. Toevallig hebben Mark en ik gisteren ook P. kleinii gevonden. Ik vind het verschil tussen 'pale yellow' en 'yellow/orange' moeilijk. Op basis van de sporenmaat zou ik eerder kiezen voor P. crystallinus? Ben heel benieuwd wat Malcolm Greaves (de maker van de sleutel) hiervan vindt. Hieronder de foto van de sporen die Malcolm Greaves voor mij heeft bevestigd.

You quote the spores as 7.5 -19.5 but looking at your micrograph they all look to be in the 7.5-9.5 range. Which is right? The colour does tend to vary but your spores do look quite pale for klenii so I think P crystalinus is the most likely. (unless the spores do reach 19.5)

"Spores 7.5 - 19.5" is a quotation from the key.
The spore sizes I measured:  Me: 10.2 x 6.4 µm, N = 10
So I will name this find P. cristallinus!

The sporangia on the lid showed already two kinds of spores.
So nice (and very educational) to see the difference!

The larger and deeper yellow/orange spores are: Me 15.2 x 9.6 µm N=10 (= P. kleinii)

Key:
Spores 7.5-11 x 5-7.5 µm, pale yellow ...................................................P. crystallinus
Spores 10-19.5 x 5.5-9.5 µm, usually deeper yellow/orange....................P. kleinii




It was very hard to find a fruitbody of P. kleinii, but in the end I succeeded :-)
