Hypoxylon macrocarpum or similar?
Garrett Taylor, 22-03-2020 01:59
Garrett TaylorI found this in New York State. On Acer.
Spore measurements:
(10.5) 11.5 - 13.4 (15.2) × (5.4) 5.8 - 6.5 (6.6) µm
Q = (1.7) 1.8 - 2.3 (2.8) ; N = 26
Me = 12.4 × 6.1 µm ; Qe = 2
Germ slits the length of spore.
Didn't see any blueing with Melzer's, but there weren't lots of mature asci.
Green pigment in KOH.
I don't believe I have a very good reference for these, all I really have is Wergen 2018 and it doesn't seem to be in there.

Re : Hypoxylon macrocarpum or similar?
Dear Garrett,

your Hypoxylon does'nt look like macrocarpum, I would rather look around H. fuscopurpureum., whiich is characterized by pyriform dark brown ascospores with a perispore not dehiscing in KOH. I could not see the images through your link.

To study Hypoxylon, I suggest you go to this website where all important features to record are listed, something to do before using the keys.

Can you please show us the spores?

Best,

Jacques

Re : Hypoxylon macrocarpum or similar?
Hope you can see these well enough. My micro camera isn't the best, the contrast is poor, but you can sort of make out the germ slit on the lower spore in the right-hand ascus. Thanks for the link. I will need to work on understanding some of these concepts.

Hi Garrett,

the blackish heteropolar ascospores fit well H. fuscopurpureum, you can assign this name to your fungus. Only the apical ring deviates if it does not turn blue with iodine. It is easier to make out on immature asci.

Nice find, to my knowledge this species is rarely recorded.

Best,

Jacques
