Cryptovalsa or Diatrypella-polysporous pyreno on Platanus
Ethan Crenson, 06-09-2017 05:36
In New York City, Inwood Hill Park. On a branch of Platanus×acerifolia.  Dark erumpant pustules, wart-like, cracking through the bark.  Up to 1 mm in diameter by about .5 mm in height, some confluent.  Several papillate ostioles on each stromata.  In section, white material around the perithecia. Asci polysporous, the spore bearing part measuring 70-80 by 15-17µm, the entire ascus 102-188µm long. Appearing IKI- after KOH pretreatment.  Ascospores allantoid, yellow in mass with tiny oil droplet at each end, 7.5-12.5 by 2.5µm.  In Vasilyeva and Stephenson (2004), Pyrenomycetes of the Great Smokey Mountains II, (admittedly, not my region) it aligns well with Cryptovalsa prominens--and it is listed with Platanus as host.  Thank you in advance!
