White Scutellinia
Malcolm Greaves, 12-08-2015 01:00
Malcolm GreavesTwo previous posts about a White Scutellinia both turned out to be Paratrichophaea boudieri but this time I am sure that this is a Scutellinia.
A group of four or five specimens found in damp soil at the edge of a ditch.
With hairs up to 1650 and spores averaging 18.47 x 11.43 with low merging ornamentation it looks right for S scutellata rather than S crinita.
I then noticed one specimen with no orange pigmentation. Having been fooled before an examination showed similarly ornamented spores and no bulbose base to any of the hairs.

Hello Mal.

Sometimes certain Apothecia are depigmented in Scutellinia; it may be this is the certain growing conditions. I never met apothecium entirely white, but very clear; essentially S.crinita.

This is a collection of Scutellinia crucipila. Snow-white apothecium between orange coloured.

Re : White Scutellinia
Thanks Michel. Schumacher has S scutellata with hairs 360-1600 and S crinita 300-900 but up to 1440 as some were up to 1640 that was why I suggested S scutellata. Is it the shape or ornamentation of the spores that makes you choose S crinita?

Re : White Scutellinia
I think the ornamentation corresponds better to S.crinita; deS.scutellata that is normally coarser.

Michel.
