Pyrenomycete on Fagus
Steve Clements,

This stromatic pyrenomycete was found on a beech Fagus sylvatica) log, 3/6/15. It was about 30 cm long. The "crust" was very rough, up to 2mm thick, with the perithecia immersed. Perithecia were approximately 0.75 x 0.5 mm, and could be easily detached from the stroma. Asci were 70-75 um long and 6 wide. They contained 8 spores, untidily packed in the apex. The apical disc stained blue in Lugol, size approximately 1.5 x 0.5 um. Spores were dropped in small numbers, these were hyaline, 7-10 x 2-2.5 with two or more guttules, slightly curved. Similar spores were also seen within the asci. Some conidia were also found on the slide. Paraphyses? were very long, to 150 x 2. I am finding identification of this easily spotted Pyrenomycete rather difficult. Could anyone help me out please?
Best regards,
Steve
Bonjours,
Cordialement,
Steve

Re : Pyrenomycete on Fagus
Hello,
that was my immediate thought too.
Rough surface and large stromata as well as the microscopical details shown qould fit perfect.
best regards,
Andreas
