This specimen was collected 20/5/15 on a stick under ash, Peak District, N. England. Rather featureless - a very thick spore deposit was obtained, spore masses appearing as tendrils on the surface. Ascus apex turning blue in Lugol.
Spores up to 13 x 6, splitting longitudinally.
Stromata dark brown with indistinct perithecial contours.
Identified from key by Norden, Laessoe and Peterson (2013)

Bonjour,
Cette specimen été recueillis 20/5/15 sur un bâton sous Fraxinus , Peak District, N. Angleterre. Plutôt sans relief, un dépôt de spores très épais a été obtenu, des masses de spores comme des vrilles sur la surface. Ascus sommet tourner bleu dans Lugol.
Spores jusqu'à 13 x 6, fractionnement longitudinalement.
Brun foncé Stromata avec contours périthèces indistincts .
Identifié à partir du clef par Norden, Laessoe et Peterson (2013)

Hi Steve,
this is unlikely a Nemania because the ostioles do not look papillate and the stroma itself does not look carbonaceous. The stromatal colour and texture rather point towards a Hypoxylon, as does the discoid apical apparatus. In Nemania the dark brown ascospores have a germ slit on the flat side, while it is on the convex side in Hypoxylon, something to check out. Testing in KOH the stromatal pigments and the dehiscence of perispores would be interesting too.

I examined the dried specimen.
The pigment is yellow brown, there are "beaded paraphyses", and what look like whitish ostioles.
The stroma shape and colour, lack of conspicuous perithecial mounds, yellowish KOH extracted pigment and ostioles fit somwhat (though they are described as having white plugs, mine are whitish with blackish plugs) H. perforatum best in the Norden, Laessoe and Peterson key, but there is just one FRDBI record (from 2013) so unlikely.

the habit of the stroma is atypical, perhaps weathered, but the pigments and ascospores dimensions preferably match those of H. petriniae. This species is very common on ash, you will soon get familiar with its variations if you collect it regularly.

We have fouund this before, sometimes with much brighter colours.
Now I shall remember to check with KOH whenever I find a Nemania or Hypoxylon.
