Fake myxo
Jan Eckstein, 05-01-2015 12:45
Hello,
the fungus looks like a myxo but it is actually an asexual form of something else. The brown spores are globose to subglobose, 5-8 µm wide and grow on colourless hyphae.
It was found on standing dead beech trunks in an old grows beech forest.
Can someone help me?
With best wishes for the New Year

Re : Fake myxo
It is a basidiomycote, a gasteroid jelly fungus! Phleogena faginea. It grows on many kinds of hardwoood trees, but esp Fagus - often on standing dead trunks
cheers

Re : Fake myxo
Hallo Jan,

riech mal dran - P. faginea hat einen unerwartet würzigen Geruch nach Liebstöckel oder Maggi.

Schöne Grüße
Gernot

Dear Thomas, dear Gernot,

thanks a lot for the very fast answers! It is a beautiful fungus, but I had no idea what it was... until now.

with best wishes

Re : Fake myxo
a Myxomycete-like thing that is supposed to be an Ascomycete and proves to be a Basidiomycete!
Mycology is definitely a hard job, thank you Thomas!
My best wishes for 2015 to you all,
Jacques

Re : Fake myxo
A useful clue that this is a basidiomycete is the presence of clamp collections - very evident in the second photo

best wishes
