Pinkish Brown Coprotus on Cow Dung
Peter Thompson,

I recently found a Coprotus species growing gregariously on wet cow dung. It looks a pinkish brown colour.
Form various keys, including the one in Ascofrance, I do not find a satisfactory match for this sample. The closest one that I can find microscopically is Coprotus granuliformis, but the fruit bodies are supposed to be whitish in this species.
I have attached an image of the fruit bodies and a sketch of the microscopy. There are two sets of measurements for the asci, as there was a noticeable width variation. The wider asci might be down to squashing in preparation for microscopy.
I wonder if anyone can help with an identification, please.
Thank you in advance,
Best Wishes,
Peter.

Good evening Peter.
Asci amyloid they are or not? You'd have to check that.

Hello Michel,
Sorry, I forgot to say that the asci show no reaction to lugol.

Hallo Peter,
as far as I can see this should be Coprotus granuliformis!
The fruitbodies are whitish when young, but will be yellow to dirty orange when get old!
This is a typical species on cowdung!

Hello Michel and Norbert,
Thank you for your help with this.
I did feel that C. granuliformis was the closest match for the microscopy, but did not consider the discolouration of the fruit bodies with age.
With Best Wishes,
Peter.
