Thecotheus lundqvistii
Christiane Baethcke, 20-01-2013 15:32
Christiane BaethckeHallo everybody,

On deer dropping in a moist box I grew a Thecotheus. Following Nordic Macromycetes Vol. 1 I end up with Thecotheus lundqistii. I found it very difficult to get the fungi mature, it took me more than 2 months to find free mature ascospores. The parafyses still don´t resemble the drawings and description of T. lundqvistii in Doveri. I assume, this is because of the difficulties of becoming mature and still not being fully grown.
Since it would be a new species for the Netherlands, I am very much interested if anyone can confirm my determination.

Best regards
Christiane

Hi Christiane.

Very interesting, but should be able to measure spore ornamentation and see better is to make a difference T.holmskjoldii and confirm the determination.?

Michel.

Re : Thecotheus lundqvistii
Dear Michel,
I had T. holmskjoldii earlier on rabbit dung. The spores were much bigger. Also were the wrats more pronounced, spcially next to the apiculi.  The fungi were easy to get mature. I have no expierence with measuring the ornamentation, when it is so small. Should I use Cotton blue to stain? I have very little material. The first photo is from T. holmskjoldii, the second fromT. lundqvistii.

Best regards
Christiane

Comparing your photos, your determination seems accurate. Should still be able to check the size of the spores. You can use as a dye cotton blue lactophenol, methyl blue, and blue ink.
Good luck.?
Michel

Re : Thecotheus lundqvistii
Thank you, Michel. The free ascospores from T. lundqvistii I measured were between 26-30 X 13-14 µm long. Beautiful photo from the spore of T. holmskjoldii! Thank you for showing! Great help for seeing the difference!
