Orbilia on Celtis occidentalis
Khomenko Igor, 18-03-2026 13:09
Khomenko IgorI recently examined Celtis occidentalis branches and found two species of Orbilia.

One 16-spored species that remind me O. serpentina.
https://www.inaturalist.org/observations/342789668

The second probably 32-spored species that looks like O. palmicola.

My location (I'm in Ottawa, ON Canada) suggests that there are something else. Maybe I missed something. I'm asking for the opinion.

Hi Igor

these are wonderful docus! I agree with both, my memory and comparison with the images leave no other option. O. palmicola is especially interesting as we had only one collection. I am quite sure that you would see a relatively thin apical thickening with ocular chamber in dead asci. The SBs are a little longer and narrower, I measured from your scale 1.5-2.5 x 0.8-1.1 µm.

Re : Orbilia on Celtis occidentalis
Thank you Zotto.

I checked Orbilia palmicola like species. I belive that I see thin apical thickening in asci in KOH (attached image).
For SBs, I'm getting the same size as you got.
*(1.2) 1.5 - 2.4 (2.7) × (0.8) 0.9 - 1.1 (1.2) µm
Q = (1.3) 1.6 - 2.5 (2.7) ; N = 32
Me = 2 × 1 µm ; Qe = 2

Re : Orbilia on Celtis occidentalis
Yes, very thin "thickening". You have no possibility to give for sequencing?  Our collection was too old for this. It would be interesting to know how close it is to the 16-spored O. pleioaustraliensis.

Re : Orbilia on Celtis occidentalis
No, I don't have access to sequencing right now, but maybe later François Guay can do it for me. He sequenced a few of my last year's collections. Including species on Equisetum that I've asked you about (?Stamnaria roseocarnea and Stamnaria mougeotii).
