Hello there, Happy new Year!

I found these small fungi in March '23 on damp lying leaf from last year. Probably Alnus incana.
Sessile to short-stalked discs on and next to leaf ribs. Pale to leather brown, some gray in the margin. Paraphyses chambered. Asci with 8 spores, J+, 63-82 x 8-11 µm. Spores ellipsoidal, 1-celled, with droplets, (11)11.5-13.5 x 3.9-4.2 µm.
On the 3rd photo there seem to be croziers. And then Hymenoscyphus phyllogenus is not an option?!

Dear Karen, happy new year to everyone!

I am sorry it is not a Hymenoscyphus, the apical pore of the asci is different. This looks like a hairy species in the Lachnaceae with the hairs with crystals sticked to the excipulum, the hairs I don't see the color in your photos but it mostly speaks for Brunnipila fuscescens.

Hi Karen and Stip,

Stip, you are fully right with the apical ring, it is Calycina-like. But I do not understand your opinion regarding Brunnipila. These broad spores with big oil drops? And what I see are strongly refractive VBs in the paraphysis tips and marginal excipulum. I do not believe that there are hairs.

H- phyllogenus has "empty" (almost eguttulate) spores too. My guess is an Allophylaria, but Calycellina is also possible, even Micropeziza I would not exclude.

For a species I have so fa no idea.

To claryfy, no hairs were found on this collection.

After examining your suggestions, Zotto, I find Allophylaria to be the best fit. And by keying it, I find nervicola. It basically fits the size of asci and spores in this post Mario Filippa, 06-12-2022 23:07 and has been found on Alnus.

But that find has only a few small LBs in the spores, a pure red reacting apical ring, and lacks croziers. I had the imagination that yours has croziers. The folder "woody" has a matching oil content but much longer spores. That on Quercus ilex leaves is fairly similar, I did not find a better match but am far from sure.

Thanks Zotto for the correction, the spores were clearly wrong, I was on the wrong leg with the hairs.
