On Populus, which is what I considered when seeing the bark, I only expect the nor uncommon Sclerencoelia fascicularis. I see no reason to doubt. The excipulum must be of isodiametric cells (globulosa-angularis).

Thank you. I'm pretty sure it's a Fagus twig. It was a pile of pruned branches, but I'll check again the next time I visit the site. I know the area very well, and there's no Populus within half a mile.

Hi Roman,
you can try a cross-section of the wood. Fagus has thick radial rays (also conspicuous in tangential section), Fraxinus is ring-porous, Populus is diffuse-porous with rather small pores.
