Tiny pyreno on hare droppings
Stefan Jakobsson, 01-07-2023 16:42
On hare droppings among many larger perithecia I found a tiny nonstromatic cleistothecious(?) fungus well below 100 µm in diameter. The asci are octosporous 32-37 × 16.6-17.6 µm and the ascospores hyaline and two-celled 15.5-17.9 × 4.9-5.5 µm.

I have found nothing matching among coprophilous species but it could perhaps be a species normally growing on wood. I would be happy for suggestions.

Re : Tiny pyreno on hare droppings
Hello Stefan.

I have never encountered this type of fungus on excrement. I also think, indeed, that it is rather a fungus coming on wood or on grass.

Michel.

To kick-start your research, microscopy reminds me Arthopyrenia species...

Re : Tiny pyreno on hare droppings
Thank you! The closest I get is Arthopyrenia salicis. Only the substrate is exceptional as it normally grows on "smooth bark". It is also quite small.
