Ciboria betulicola?
Henri Koskinen, 12-04-2023 07:35
Hi all. Here is a Ciboria I collected 09.04 in Finland.  I was thinking maybe Ciboria betulicola as there were leaves of birch and catkins which looked like birch male catkins.  Spores were 10 - 12 x 5 - 7.  I find very little info about C. betulicola but I think spores of betulicola should be smaller?

Re : Ciboria betulicola?
Hi Henri,

the old online-key by Schumacher and Holst-Jensen has a 'Ciboria' betulae (Woronin) White with larger spores.

Regards

Re : Ciboria betulicola?
What a nice collection! To clarify, better micros would be necessary.

If you have the spores a bit larger and without measurements, I could better see the contents. It seems they are 1-nucleate but if you have more photos this could become

clearer.

Also needed is the IKI reaction of the ascus apex and the croziers at their base.

C. betulicola has indeed smaller spores, e.g. in Elliott 1973. In my folder there is one with living spores of8,2 - 9,4 x 3,6 - 4,7 µm.

C. betulae hase slightly fusoid, warted spores and lacks croziers. It grows on seeds instead of catkins.

Stop: Now I looked at the substrate, it looks to me much like Salix male catkins that lost their flowers. So this is Ciboria caucus. If you tell me place where you found it, I will put these data to the photos.

Re : Ciboria betulicola?
Thank you, I add 4 images (used water and Melzer).  I left the spore images very dark for better details, maybe they are too dark.

Re : Ciboria betulicola?
Spores are sharp, croziers are splendid, for the asci poil imkmerison is necessary. But I am now sure about the identity.

here my drawing shows Salix caprea remnants of the catkins.

Re : Ciboria betulicola?
Thank you, there were also Salix caprea nearby, even though birch was dominating.  This was collected in Helsinki, Finland.

Re : Ciboria betulicola?
Can you please be a bit more precise, was it inside the town, in which part of the town?
Henri Koskinen, 12-04-2023 18:03
Re : Ciboria betulicola?
Inside Helsinki city limits, humid broad leaf woodland, birch, Salix caprea, ferns.  Exact spot is  N=6677572.179, E=389648.141 (ETRS-TM35FIN).  Is this useful?  Helsinki, Keinumäki.

I transferred to 60°13'11.825" 25°0'29.298" and find it in Viikin arboretum.

Re : Ciboria betulicola?
Yes that is correct, it is a large dendrological arboretum where some parts are left more or less  unattended and in quite natural state.
