Perrotia(?) on Populus
Stefan Jakobsson, 07-04-2023 00:14
On a dead branch of Salix caprea still on a standing tree, under the outermost layer of bark there were some minute sessile apothecia, up to 0.3 mm diameter, light brownish and the margin of the cup white, bringing Pyrenopeziza to mind.

Under the microscope the smooth cylindrical marginal hairs are hyaline but scattered tufts of short hairs on the flanks are brown with firmly attached granules on the surface. The hairs do not react in any way in 3 or even 10 percent KOH. The parafyses are filiform and the asci are eight-spored, have croziers, 51-71 × 8.1-9.6 µm, negative in IKI. The spores as in the photos, 13.1-17.9 × 3.8-4.6 µm.

I have tried to find a name for this one, but in vain. I have search in Perrotia and several other genera, but so far no result. So help would be most welcome. Thanks in advance.

--------

I must correct myself: this one was not growing on Salix but on old twigs of Populus tremula lying on top of a heap on the ground - but still quite dry and airy.

Anything in Hyphodiscaceae? It has certain resemblance to Venturioscypha nigropila nom prov

I have tested the keys in your new paper on Hymenodiscaceae. But I did not find a good match there either.

I hear you. But Venturioscypha is not there (yet) ! :-)

Hi Stefan

I have a little problem with your measurements. Does the ascus size refer to dead asci? Because the living asci are about 3x as wide as the spores within. When the spores measure up to 18 x 4.5 µm, then the asci are turgescent 11 µm wide.

In any case an interesting species. The hairs remind me a bit of a Hyalopeziza, but that genus is difficult to define.

Re : Perrotia(?) on Salix
It seems I had measured dead asci. Now I measured only turgescent asci and got an average of 62x11 µm.
