Hysterium-like on Fraxinus
Marc Detollenaere, 08-03-2023 23:06
Marc DetollenaereDear Forum,

On Fraxinus I found some elongated black ascomata with hyaline spores, 1 to 3-septate, with warts. They measured 17-18.5x5-5.5µ. The asci were biseriate and measured about 50x8.5µ.
Any suggestions?
Thanks in advance

Marc

Re : Hysterium-like on Fraxinus
Hello Marc
Pienso que es un hongo liquenizado. En esta página:

https://italic.units.it/?procedure=idkeys
tiene buenas claves. Le recomiendo la clave 42. Yo creo que su liquen es cercano a Arthonia atra.

I've immediatly thought at a lichenized fungus . But we should be able to see the elements a little better.

Thank you for the quick response.
Around the ascomata I  only see unbarked wood. Why do you propose an  lichenized fungus?

Re : Hysterium-like on Fraxinus
Hi Marc, lichens are associations between fungi and algae. In his photograph it can be seen that the lirelas settle on a green thallus that in turn grows on wood. There are many lichens whose reproductive structures are hysterothecia: Graphis, Arthonia, Alyxoria, Zwackhia, etc...

In a photo taken from further away, the thallus can be clearly seen.

Re : Hysterium-like on Fraxinus
That may not actually be a thallus but just bleached wood, the algae that are there may be a casual association. You see this with Mellitiosporium propolidoides and Xerotrema. There is some debate as to whether these fungi are "facultative lichens" that is, they may have some interactions with algae but aren't forming a distinctive thallus. Regardless, the fungus may be treated in the lichen literature, and it may be Ostropales or something in Dothideomycetes.
