White Hymenoscyphus on Aesculus fruit capsule
Edvin Johannesen, 07-10-2022 20:49
Edvin JohannesenHi!

Tiny (0.2-0,4 mm) short-stipitate, circular or somewhat floriform apothecia growing on the inside of Aesculus hippocastaneus fruit capsules (interestingly along with Erysiphe flexuosa). Asci IKI+ with a reddish brown apical ring in Baral'sche Lösung, only weakly positive with Lugol. I believe I see croziers (see photos). Spores fusiform, many are slightly curved, ca. (8-)10-12 x 2-2.5 micr, one-septate, each cell with 1-2 large guttules, sometimes with additional smaller ones. Paraphyses aguttulate.  I have not studied the excipulum in detail (one photo of small section only).

Suggestions appreciated.  Thanks!

The apical ring clearly excludes a Hymenoscyphus! Possible is a Calycina. The thin-walled exciple and the small spores appear to exclude an Allophylaria.

The spores are difficult to se, perhaps dead? Probably they are septate when mature inside the living asci.

Perhaps Calcina subherbarum??

Thanks, Zotto. There genus delimitations here are a bit confusing to me. Is there an updated key to the relevant genera?  Anyway, C. subherbarum seems like a good fit. I will study it further.

I do not see the name Calycina subherbarum in Index Fungorum. Is it the same as Hymenoscyphus subherbarum Raitv. & M.P. Sharma? Was it never formally re-combined or has IF not picked it up?

Re : White Hymenoscyphus on Aesculus fruit capsule
There is a strong blue reaction with Lugol after pre-treatment with KOH and washing with water.

I do not know if the spores are dead (this is dried material), but they are consistently 1-septate inside the asci.

I also enclose more images of the subhymenial/excipular (difficult to make a nice thin section) structure.

I'm struggling a bit with camera noise on high magnification.  Sorry.

Hymenosc. subherbarum is probably a different species, it is a simultaneous creation.

C. subherbarum was never validly published, yes.

The LBs in the spores I do not see clearly, surely they are dead. In KOH it would proably be clearer.

Re : White Hymenoscyphus on Aesculus fruit capsule
Yes, the LBs are definitely clear in KOH. I will thencall this C. herbarum with a note on the croziers and the provisional C. subherbarum.

Thanks again.
