Scutellinia
Malcolm Greaves, 10-06-2022 00:28
Malcolm GreavesCould someone give me a suggestion for this Scutellinia.
It was found on a patch of soil at the side of a woodland road. A quite large group of 20 or more specimens the largest being 4mm.
The spores were broadly ellipsoid av 19.9 x 15.2 and were covered in medium sized mostly isolated warts. They were not large enough to justify S umbrorum so I was thinking S patagonica was the likely candidate.
I then measured the hairs and found they were single rooted with a maximum length of 200.
This does not fit well with any species that I can find.
Can anyone give it a name from these details.
Thanks
Mal

Re : Scutellinia
Dear Malcolm,
are you sure about the hairs length? Based on your macropicture, some hairs seem to be longer than indicated.
I would suggest S. nigrohirtulla.

Nicolas
My apologies, I found one or two groups of Scutellinia and I posted the wrong macro photo. The hair lengths are right and I have now added a new correct photo of the find.

Re : Scutellinia
Hello Mal,

how high is the ornamentation? It seems a bit more pronounced than the < 0.4 um height given by Schumacher for nigrohirtula.

It reminds me on S. peloponnesiaca as described by both Moravec and Glejdura. Have you seen any 4-spored asci? Did the perispore loosen in LA? There is a scottish collection ID'd as patagonica by Schumacher, which has however smaller spores more like peloponnesiaca and loosening perispore (Yao & Spooner 1996, Notes on British species of Scutellinia).

Glejdura's (2016) description of his 7 Slovak colls. ID'd as S. peloponnesiaca:

Apothecia sessile, flat, with an unconspicuous margin, 0.5-3 mm in diam., with (vivid) red hymenium. Hairs light yellowish brown, short, septate. Marginal hairs little differentiated, on the base with 1-2-3 roots, 80-130(250) um long. Asci often with 4 normal and 4 undeveloped spores. Spores broadly ellipsoid to subglobose, rarely globose, 15-21.7 × 15-19.5 um, ornamented with unevenly dispersed small warts [or tubercles?], sometimes confluent into short irregular ridges or small rings, warts 0.4-2.8 um broad and 0.4-1.4 um high.

Re : Scutellinia
Hello Viktorie
I have added a couple more photos. Unfortunately no sign of 4 spored basidia and no loosening of the perispore.
Mal
Ps I struggled to get an acurate measure of the wart height but I would say mostly .5 with the largest up to 1µ

Ah, then my impression was wrong. I think I agree with Nicolas.
