Hypoxylon rubiginosum?
Gernot Friebes, 30-03-2009 20:37
Hello,

on Saturday I found this pyrenomycet on a branch of Fraxinus, together with Hypoxylon intermedium and Hypoxylon cercidicolum. At first I really was surprised about the striking yellow, somehow powdery interior of the stromata but after testing the KOH-extractable pigments (orange) and the microscopical features everything fits perfectly to Hypoxylon rubiginosum.

I have never seen such yellow colours within Hypoxylon rubiginosum so I would appreciate your experiences about this species!

Best wishes,

Gernot

Shameless plug:

Please see H. rubiginosum. I do remember the yellow color from my collections from the Great Smoky Mountains National Park (TN and NC), USA.

Jack Rogers also reports it in his collections:

Re:Hypoxylon rubiginosum?
Hello Andy,

thank you for your response and for the links! Also Jacques Fournier mentions the yellow colour: http://pyrenomycetes.free.fr/hypoxylon/html/Hypoxylon_rubiginosum.htm but I've never seen a collection or a foto with such a striking color before.

Best wishes,

Gernot

Opps! My apologizes to Jacques... his website is certainly much more informative than mine.

Sorry Jacques.
