Hello all

A recent collection of this fungus on fallen leaves of a planted tree of variegated holly allowed a detailed study of its structures. One thing which was surprising was the presence of amorphous crystals in (or on) the pycnidial wall (top right in accompanying plate). These were definitely not stray crystals from the host tissues or another source, but solely confined to the pycnidia. I can find no references to this in the literature.

It might be interesting to see whether others have observed this or could look out for this feature. Particularly interesting would be whether such crystals also occur in var. nobilis on dead Laurus leaves or whether the crystal formation is triggered by having Ilex as a host.

Cordialement, Chris
