Calycellina cedricola?
Khomenko Igor, 31-01-2022 18:38
Khomenko IgorHello,

I'm trying to identify this tiny white discomycete that grows on old needles.
I've observed it twice around Ottawa, ON, Canada in late fall. The first time on needles of Tsuga canadensis on Nov 5, 2020, and the second time on needles Pinus strobus on Nov 11, 2021.
It is very distinct, with helicoid marginal hairs with VBs and small biguttulate spores.
Apothecia are 0.2-0.5mm in diameter, stipe 0.1-0.4mm.
Asci 8-spored, IKI bb, croziers(+).
Ascospores ellipsoid, with two guttules that probably always touching the wall, measure
4.9 - 6.2 × 2.2 - 3  µm

I'm thinking these could be Calycellina cedricola, but I've only seen a few pictures from Zotto's drive and I couldn't find any description of the species.

(Pictures are here)
#657   (on Tsuga) https://inaturalist.org/observations/64258826
#1335 (on Pinus)  https://inaturalist.org/observations/100874895

Thank you for your help,
Igor

Re : Calycellina cedricola?
Indeed similar! Quite an unusual Calycellina, more reminiscent of Calycina with this long and narrow stalk. But the helicoid hair tip sounds like what was earlier Phialina.

Spores are distinctly wider in your sample.

In Huhtinen 1990 is only a Phialina pusilla from India, but apos sessile and spores longer and with two larger LBs.

Thank you, Zotto. I looked at Huhtinen 1990 and I see that nothing matches. It will remain a mystery for now.
