Lecanoromycetes? Discomycete on Alnus bark
Gernot Friebes, 25-01-2022 15:06
Hi,

we are hoping that someone might recognize this strange discomycete found on bark of living Alnus glutinosa (leg. A. Gallé). An ITS sequence was produced by M. Grube and further ITS and LSU sequences by J. Karakehian. The latter point towards a relationship to Lecanoromycetes.
The apothecia are apparently non-lichenized.
I attach a few photos which should show the most important characteristics. Some are taken in Lugol (asci with a blue reaction). If further information is needed I will try to provide it.

Best wishes,
Gernot

I wonder about the genus Tryblis. There are two species covered in Magnes, 1997.

Dear Gernot,

I think I found the same fungus in the Bavarian Forest on Fagus and asked Zdenek Palice about it. He also collected it on Quercus in CZ but we were not able to identify it, even to the genus.

So we are very intereted in this discussion but cannot helpt with the identification, unfortunately.

The fungus has some distinct features such as a high hymenium, blackening margin and nice large spores (see attached images).

With best wishes

Hi,

Jason, I guess the reaction of the asci in Lugol is quite different from Tryblis but who knows...

Jan, thanks a lot for sharing this valuable information. Are your collections (yours and Zdenek's) plentiful enough for further studies? Generating more sequences would certainly be interesting (would you be willing to do that, Jason?). Did you also observe a similar reaction of the asci in Lugol?

Best wishes,
Gernot

Re : Lecanoromycetes? Discomycete on Alnus bark
Hallo,

unfortunately my collection is quite poor
i saw likely the same taxon also on Acer pseudoplatanus but destroyed the only apothecium  because of microscoping

I will try to search for this taxon as soon as I start my field season, and may provide the material if I am succesfull
it seems to occur on bark of still living deciduous trees, in the cases I saw there was a disturbing company by lichens. that may be by the reason why it is sometimes overlooked over that it is a quite distinctive, relatively large fungus

I was originally thinking that it is a member of Leotiomycetes so that the hint it is close to Lecanorymecetes was surprising to me

the true is that the asci tips are a bit similar to those of Protothelenella and Thrombium - Protothelenellaceae, the small group of poorly lichenized and very different Ostropomycetideae with perithecioid ascomata within Lecanoromycetes

possibly the same fungus was shown earlier on this forum by Thomas Læssøe

http://www.ascofrance.fr/search_forum/66013

but the dark margin is not visible on images

I am curious on the further progress with this troublesome but apparently not so rare fungus

Re : Lecanoromycetes? Discomycete on Alnus bark
Dear Gernot,

there are about 10 apothecia left in my collection, so it would be possible to use 2-3 for DNA. Please say where to send them.

With best wishes
