black disco from the Bavarian forest
Lothar Krieglsteiner, 04-09-2021 21:31
Lothar Krieglsteiner... today on lying log of Fagus east of Spiegelau. The spores were about 8-11/5-5,5 µm (rough measurement), with IKI I could not obtain any reaction of the ascus or elsewhere. This was a surprise to me as I had thought of Rhizodiscina or Dactylospora.
What could it be else?
The spores were oil-rich, with hardly visible walls in H20 - it became more clear in IKI. The black globose excipulum and the filiform paraphyses do not give me a lot of nints.
Best, Lothar

Re : black disco from the Bavarian forest
Hmm, did you test KOH whether some exudate dissolves? I assume there is no thallus at all?

Re : black disco from the Bavarian forest
I just tried KOH - the picture became clear with better visible asci and excipulum (than in water and in IKI), but there was no )(or at least only few) pigment dissolving or anything like this.
The apothecia are nested in a black "slime" - or better "cream" but with no notable structure, so I do not think it is a (true) lichen, although I found algae cells in the "cream" I just examined.
So - ???

Re : black disco from the Bavarian forest
Very difficult to say. It reminds me more of something like Agyrium than Helotiales. But Agyrium reacts with IKI (entire hymenium). A section of an apothecium would give additional insights. What is the apo diameter?

thanks! I hope to find the time to try in the evening.

Hi Zotto,
here I made some fotos of a section - I hope it helps (?)
Again: no reaction with IKI.
Best, Lothar

Good, but I fear I have no further idea. Do you think the dark brown spores are overmature ascospores of this fungus? They never occurred inside dead asci?

Re : black disco from the Bavarian forest
Hello Zotto,
thanks anyway. I have no idea if the black spores are from the fungus or not.
So - not for the first time - a colletion remains unnamed.
Yours, Lothar

Re : black disco from the Bavarian forest
Hallo , what about Placynthiella lichen (Trapeliaceae), stunted/elderly specimen associated with a slime-cocktail of non-symbiotic algae, fungi and whatever? the asci are quite typical, the exciple should have a paraplectenchymatic structure with pigmented walls of hyphae but from some reason it is not clearly visible, the thallus which discriminates among single species is obscured unfortunately. I guess the brown spores were not released from asci. Zdenek

Hello Zdenek,
thanks for your suggestion and information - I think you are right.

Re : black disco from the Bavarian forest
A good idea Zdenek! Morphologically I see much similarities to the photos and drawings in my folder in Baeomycetales (Ostropomycetidae). But the hemiamyloid hymenium would discriminate this genus. Lothar, did you test IKI after KOH-pretreatment? See image of Placynthiella icmalea and P. cf. uliginosa below.

Hello Zotto,
I tried IKI without KOH pretreatment. I will try later (I hope still today) with, and post again.
Thanks again, Lothar

Re : black disco from the Bavarian forest
I just tried KOH and then IKI - no reaction. But possibly it is because the fungus is already quite old (?).

Re : black disco from the Bavarian forest
No, iodine reactions do not disappear. The material you showed looks quite fine.

I assume you washed the slide with water which must be done after KOH-pretreatment. You see it easily when afzet adding IKI or MLZ the iodine colour disappears because there is still too much KOH in the mount. I2 + KOH -> colourless KI.

Re : black disco from the Bavarian forest
hm - then it must be another fungus. I prepared another one (of the few still left) apothecia, put it in KOH 5per cent for some time, then moved it intensively through three successive drops of pure water, and then mounted in IKI. No reaction still.
So it must remain unclear, I fear
Thanks again to you both, Zotto and Zdenek,
and best regards
