Lachnum on fallen branch
Juuso Äikäs, 27-07-2021 13:05
These I found on Sunday, growing in a moist depression on a decorticated piece of fallen branch.

Asci without croziers, but many with a basal protuberance. Hairs mostly moderately swollen at the apex, with VBs. Paraphyses also with VBs. I only found a few free spores, but they seemed mature and measured 9.2 - 10.1 × 2.1 - 2.4 µm.

I think this could be either L. brevipilosum or L. pudibundum, but I'm not sure which one...

Re : Lachnum on fallen branch

Hi Juuso,

I collected what I regarded to be good pudibundum from dead wood of Crataegus and the apothecia readily discoloured reddish-brown.

Best wishes,

Charles.

Re : Lachnum on fallen branch
Thanks for the reply. I tried squashing a few apos and they turned brown, maybe a little reddish as well. But I think the redding is a quality shared by all Lachnums with VBs, if I'm not mistaken.

This needs more mature apothecia. Good would also to know be the substrate. In mature L. pudibundum the paraphyses protrude by around 10-15 µm, not so in brevipilosum.

Yes, only species with VBs turn reddish-brownish.

Ok, thanks. I'll see if I can keep the sample alive for a while.
