Scutellinia on wet soil
Juuso Äikäs, 21-07-2021 14:37
This solitary Scutellinia was growing on wet, muddy soil next to water.

The spores measure 19.7 - 21.7 × 12 - 13.6 µm (H2O, crushed sample), and the hairs are max. 1350 µm long.

The spores are a bit large for it, but could this pass as S. crinita? Or does it even grow on soil?

Re : Scutellinia on wet soil
I would be going for S crinita and yes it does grow on soil.

Re : Scutellinia on wet soil
The growth of S. crinita on very wet soil is not common, but it's possible. And I don't know what another species this could be.
Greetings,
Marek

Re : Scutellinia on wet soil
I recently found an atypical scutellia similar to yours - http://www.ascofrance.com/forum/69397/scutellinia-crinita-or-pilatii , but on very wet and very rotten trunk, not on soil.

There, on the basis of the size and shape of the ascospores, it was suggested to me that it may be S.pilatii (BTW, confined to wet habitats). But after studying of two other apothecia taken in one centimeter from first, I still think that this is atypical apothecia of S.crinita. IMHO, only molecular study can resolve this problem.

Re : Scutellinia on wet soil
Thanks for the info! I'll have to keep the S. pilatii option in mind when gathering from wet places in the future. That one isn't on the Finnish species list, but there are probably many Scutellinias missing from it anyways (like the apparent S. olivascens that I fouund earlier).

Re : Scutellinia on wet soil
It seems to me that Sergey's S. cf. pilatii has finer ornamentation on the ascospores than here.
