Récolte réalisé sur Rhytidiadelphus (Pessière sur tourbe à 1'017 m), apothécies 0.15 - 0.5 mm de diamètre, blanc, stipitée, asques 60 - 75 x 6 - 8 µm, avec crochets, octosporés, IKI-, IKI/KOH+, spores 4.5 - 6 x 3 - 4 µm, finement verrruqueuse, hyalines, paraphyses non renflées au sommet, garnies de petites guttules. Merci d'avance.

funny, seems to be a new species among those of Pithyella (not sure why I wrote Calyptellopsis ahead in my folder) with warted spores. There is almost a continuum from globose-spored ones over subglobose, ovoid, to lemon-shaped. "Muscicola" dubia is very similar to yours but has smaller, especially narrower spores and has curved hairs.

The limits to Bryoscyphus are vague. Strange that you saw no IKI reaction, there was no reddish ring?

Danke vielmals, die fehlenden Haare haben mich nicht an Pithyella denken lassen, hingegen passen die warzigen Sporen auch nicht so recht zu Bryoscyphus.

PS: Hab mein Lugol etwas erneuert, nun reagiert die Ascusspitze blau.

I found this again yesterday. It's a nice thing but I struggled to visualise the spore ornamentation quite a bit.

I agree with Zotto that species in Bryoscyphus, Muscicola and Bryoscyphus are all closely related, perhaps even congenic. The hair cells of the apothecia look very similar in all of them that I have looked at in Zotto's folder etc., with 1-2 guttulate, often inflated cells (living). The paraphyses also not apically inflated, apical cell often seems short, and they are densely guttulate pretty much throughout.

I wonder if the guttules obscure finely punctate spore ornamentation in the more well known species of Bryoscyphus thought to have smooth spores.

Anyway, I collected about 10 apothecia from my sample for ITS and LSU. Fingers crossed it works. There was a lot of algae and other junk on the sample.

Actually, your spores were smaller than mine, Elisabeth. And their ornamentation more conspicuous. Mine almost appear smooth. But the rest is very similar.

Yes indeed, it must be a different species. You posted a drawing that in your first message which is now redrawn. Could you please show it again so that measurements and data about the asci can be saved?

Yes I think the spores are smooth.

Why couldn't your sample belong to Bryoscyphus rhombisporus? That undescribd species has a sequence (ITS band LSU D1-D4, so we could compare.

Hi Both,

Thanks. I realised some errors in my drawing so will fix before re-posting here. The apothecia in this case were up to approx 0.5mm, not up to 1.5. I also examined another apothecium to try see the hair cells better.


Regarding possible ornamentation, in some empty spores the possible puncta seemed more obvious. When I have access to my Leitz again from tomorrow I will try to visualise them better. Perhaps they were an artefact. Certainly difficult to resolve and not consistent.


I agree with B. rhombisporus. I originally did not realize that the Muscicola / Pithyella one with lemon-shaped spores was different to what you call B. rhombisporus. I think croziers were present but I will check again.


It will be good to compare the sequences, and also with the two Pithyella spp. I hope to sequence as well.

I will update this info in a separate forum post soon.
