Pyrenopeziza-like fungus on aspen
Kosonen Timo, 18-06-2021 23:08
Kosonen Timo
Hello,

Any ideas on this one? Spores ca. 14 x 3, with (0)1-3 septa. Asci with croziers and with prominent plug in Lugol's. Excipulum of elongated thick-walled cells. Hairs dark-coloured / brown with warts, but hyaline / smooth towards the apex, thick-walled. Sorry, no scale. On dead wood of Populus tremula.

Hi Timo

what is the size of the hairs? Ascus reaction is blue? Calycina-like?

Spores are septate already inside the living asci? Apos 0.3 mm diam.?

I have no idea.

Arachnopeziza seems to get close especially with 1-3 sepate ascospores and size, hairs can be smooth at tips but are long? IKI+?  Just a suggestion.

Re : Pyrenopeziza-like fungus on aspen
Hi,

..on the road, several weeks of field work this year, i'll get back with measurements & better photos later next week. --Spores alone might fit Arachnopeziza yes, but otherwise not looking at Arachno at all, starting from the textura oblita. Spores mainly aseptate in the asci. Hairs maybe c. 5-7 um wide.

The apos sit tight in the substrate. I tried to pick one to make a slide and it resulted in the hymenium (+ medullary excipulum?) squeezing out of the apo like a bursting pimple... the point being that the dark-pigmented flanks - outer excipulum - forms a tight package acting almost like a separate covering structure.

5-7 µm wide hairs! This would mean they attain 100 µm in length. It looks a bit like a Fuscolachnum.
