Pyreno with versicolorous spores on Hickory nut shell
Ethan Crenson,

Hello all,
Earlier this week I found this pyrenomycete in a New York City Park. It was growing on the shell of a Hickory nut, possibly Carya glabra. Uni-peritheciate, but sometimes growing in conjoined clusters. Brittle and carbonaceous. Unfortunately, it was a bit overripe, because I was unable to find asci and the spores looked a little worn out. But they had an unusual feature which I have never encountered: a dark brown band at the midpoint and hyaline, or near-hyaline end cells. Ascospores measure 12-16 x 5-6µm. They are either two or three septate (it is hard to tell if there is a septation underneath the dark band.). Has anyone any idea what this might be?
Thanks in advance,
Ethan

Re : Pyreno with versicolorous spores on Hickory nut shell
I definitely see a resemblance to Melanomma cf. minervae in the database collected by Alain Gardiennet on 31-03-2012 (http://www.ascofrance.fr/search_recolte/3195) on the substrate Noyau de cornouille. And also Melanomma cf. minervae collected by Savic Dragisa on 14-03-2019 (http://www.ascofrance.fr/search_forum/56784) on a seed of Cornus. Am I on to something here?
