Unknown (to me) turqoise cup fungus
Arend van Peer, 19-04-2021 18:54
Dear All,

I have been forwarded to this forum by a friend, as I usually observe and identify macroscopic mushrooms, and was unable to get any identification on the fungus I found last weekend.

Substrate is probably oak, location is mid of the Netherlands, weather during the past days has been cold with some frost in the night but sunny during the day.

The wood was clearly colored green-blue, which is why I collected it. The fruitingbodies/ascocarps were so tiny I did not see them at first, only upon close inspection, and all pictures were made with a binocular+phone.

I hope you can help me and let me know what species it might be. I kind a ruled out Chlorociboria sp. with the books I have.

Hallo Arend,

THis will be Aeruginoscyphus sericeus, it actually grows from old fruitbody remnants and is hyaline when young.
I am sorry Andy.

Cheers,

Stip

Re : Unknown (to me) turqoise cup fungus
Dear Stip,

Thank you very much. It turns out to be quite rare in the Netherlands, and there is also little literature. But having a name helps me a lot.

One more question, you mention it grows from old fruitbody remnants. Do you mean its own fruitbody remnants, or that of another species? Just being curious here.

Best, and thanks once more for the quick answer.

Hi Arend,

This species was remarkably preesented by René Dougoud in our journal Ascomycete.org .

I am sending it to your mail box

(and I take the opportunity to greet my friend Stip at the same time.)

Amitiés. Michel

Hallo Arend,

the species grows from its own old fruitbodies (as you can see on te 5th photo) it is typical behaviour, it is a rare species in all of Europe, in the Netherlands known from Utrecht (Amelisweerd) and around Apeldoorn

@Michel, I hope we can meet again in the near future.

Amitiés

Stip

Not in GenBank.  Can someone sequence it?

Best,
Andy

Re : Unknown (to me) turqoise cup fungus
Hallo Andy,

It is in Genbank as Erinella aeruginosa, I made the culture and deposited in CBS and that was the best suiting name for it at that time. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/nuccore/MH865123.1

cheers,

Stip

Ah, very interesting.  This sequence was just released last month.  Pedro should update the taxonomic name in GenBank.

Thanks,
Andy

Re : Unknown (to me) turqoise cup fungus
Hi Andy,

this date of sequence release is wrong, they are used in SIM 92 2019 and since than in GB. But I agree, the name should be updated.

Cheers,

Stip
