A large group of what I expected to be Peziza were found in soil under a Taxus in a local churchyard. With no bluing of the asci and heavily warted and ridged spores with two guttules averaging 14.5 - 15 x 7 - 7.8 it looks to be a good fit for Sowerbyella radiculata. The fruitbodies are much less yellow than the books show but we have had severe frosts and lots of rain over the last few night so could that have caused the change in colour? Also although it has a very thin root there is not the strong hairy root that is described in the literature.
Is there another species I should be looking at.

The spore dimensions fit better with S. crassisculpturata, but the ornamentation (almost reticulate) points to S. radiculata.
Maybe some other pictures of ascospores could help.

Based on these new pictures, I would say it is S. crassisculpturata because the spore ornamentation is heterogenous. My collections of S. radiculata have smaller ascospores and these spores are mainly reticulate.
Of course the differences between these two species are subtle and may only represent a variation. A molecular revision of the genus Sowerbyella will help to clarify the true and "false" species.

Yo tambien pienso viendo la ornamentacion de las ascosporas que se trata de Sowerbyella crassisculpturata. El color y la forma de la base de los apotecios no aclara mucho. Habria que ver la base para ver si el apotecio es ampliamente radicante (S.radiculata ) o posee una pequeña fijacion al substrato (en ese caso S.crassisculpturata). La dimension esporal no parece ayudar mucho en estos dos casos, ya que se solapan las medidas.
En cambio el color de los apotecios puede ayudar bastante, ya que S,radiculata presenta tonos mas vivos y citrinos, frente a S,crassisculpturata que tiene tonos menos vivos.
