Help identification: is this spore a spore of Puccinia ?
Yannick Miras, 19-11-2020 15:38
Dear Colleagues,
May you help me in order to know if this fungal spore is Puccinia? If yes, do you think possible to know which species of Puccinia it can be?
I really thank you for your help.
Best wishes
Yannick

Re : Help identification: is this spore a spore of Puccinia ?
Hi Yannick,

it could be a uredospore of a rust fungus. Unfortunately, it is not even possible to identify this to genus level though. It could be Puccinia, Uromyces...

When it comes to rust ID, the first step is to identify the host plant. Once this is done, there are usually only a few or even just one rust species left and identification becomes feasible on most cases. If you just found a single spore in one of your preparations, there is no chance of identification, unfortunately.

Re : Help identification: is this spore a spore of Puccinia ?
Hi Björn,Thank you very much for your answer. It will be unfortunately impossible to identfy the plant host. These spores come indeed from a lacustrine core I am currently studying. I am palynologist. But I will investigate the rust fungi. Thanks again. Best wishes
