Is this a lichenicolous ascomycete?
Jennifer Fiorentino, 04-11-2020 14:06
I collected this thinking it was an arthonoid lichen growing on the bark of an old carob tree in Mediterranean Malta. However on close examination I realised that the black, arthonoid structures were rather powdery, gave some brown, septate spores, 20-15 x 4.5 - 6 um. and seemed to be growing on the lichen Arthonia atra. Am I dealing with a lichenicolous fungus and could it be an ascomycete? Photos of A. atra and the black, powdery structures as well as some of the spores observed are shown.

Hallo, It is really hard to say from these pictures, but as for the brown spore, could this be a released ascospore from Rebentischia massalongii? I have impression that the narrowed left end of the ascospore on the last picture shows kind of hyaline cell. But maybe I am completely wrong. I am not the specialist. Zdenek

Hi,

I ddon't recognize old Rebentischia ascospores. It could be conidia of a lichenicoulous hyphomycete. But you have to show conidiogenous cells.
