I am struggling a bit to identify this one. First I arrived at Albotricha laetior, but the paraphyses are not broadly lanceolate (they are narrowly laceolate to cylindrical). Then I probed Lasiobelonium variegatum, but the hairs don't quite fit, I think. Spores are in the range 10x3 my and become 1-septate at maturity. Hairs thick-walled and brown, except for the pointed tips. Some hairs have granules in water, and some have a rounded tip. Ascus pore reacts purplish brown in Baral's Lösung. Growing on bark of Populus tremula. Photos in water diluted Cotton Blue.

This requires to know the oil content of the spores. Any photos in water? Important also whether the spores are ejected when 1-septate or non-septate. The large hyaline regions look like oil bodies (you can also mount in KOH if nothing is alive). Perhaps L. lonicerae?

Thanks, Zotto. The spores are septate while still inside the asci. I will image spores in water to check the oil drops.

I saw this but this says little. As I am sermonizing since decades, spores may get overmature inside dead asci. You must view living asci, otherwise you cannot be sure.

Ok. I am not sure how to decide whether asci are alive or not, but here are som pictures in water. Septa are formed within the asci. So are large oil drops, but it may seem like they are lost when spores are ejected. Not sure if this helps. Obviously I am looking at dried material (collected in March). By the way, the hairs look more obtuse now, pale brown, septate and apically somewhat incrusted.

Thanks again. I once had the instructive front page of yours, but somehow it got lost. I know the importance of live vs. dead asci and spores, but just didn't have a good information source - until now :-)
I checked L. lonicerae in the meantime and it makes perfect sense. I also excluded L. variagatum in the first round due to a comment from you in a related topic here about the undulating hairs below.
