Xylaria on shells of decaying almonds (Prunus dulcis)
Stephen Martin Mifsud, 21-10-2018 20:46
Stephen Martin MifsudHi,  I wonder if this is interesting - a Xylaria sp. specifically growing on the shells (perhaps also kernels) of decaying Almond fruits in a damp ground. I was thinking that it is Xylaria oxyacanthae, since this species is reported to grow on a Rosaceae genus (Crataegus)... but maybe you have better suggestions. I would also be happy to submit other micro photos or even samples, but at the moment I have not inspected the specimens I collected very well.

Here are some gross-morphology pics.

Re : Xylaria on shells of decaying almonds (Prunus dulcis)
Hi Stephen,

there is a new paper (I don't have access):

JU Y.-M., ROGERS J.D. & HSIEH H.-M. 2018. Xylaria species associated with fallen fruits and seeds. Mycologia, 110(4): 726–749.

Maybe this would help.

Regards

Martin

Re : Xylaria on shells of decaying almonds (Prunus dulcis)
Thanks for the emails and feedback on this Xylaria. I have visited the population and taken a few fresh specimens. The stromata showed to have small (0.3-0.4mm) perithecia, but unfortunately, I think they are immature as I could not see any asci or ascospores. I managed to see a few cystidia though. The perithecia are still watery-gelatinous so I need to wait another 2 weeks or so for maturation.

The stomatal tissue becomes green in KOH
