White form of Proliferodiscus tricolor?
Gernot Friebes, 06-02-2018 11:49
Hi,

on the weekend I collected some fungi on the bark of a living Quercus tree. One turned out to be a white discomycete; in the field I wasn't even sure if it was an ascomycete or a cyphelloid basidiomycete. Next to this white fungus grew Proliferodiscus tricolor, which is certainly a characteristic species for this habitat. Another accompanying fungus was Orbilia vinosa.

It took me a while to realize that the white fungus might just be a form without pigment of P. tricolor – the microscopic features turned out to be very similar/identical. The spore sizes of both collections fit well for P. tricolor.

Are there previous reports of white apothecia in Proliferodiscus? Or could it actually be a different species? Looking forward to your comments!

Best wishes,
Gernot

PS: In this post I attach photos of the typical P. tricolor collection.
